The CRAFT Framework
CRAFT is a structured approach to writing effective AI prompts, designed for healthcare professionals who need accurate, safe, and useful AI outputs.
C — Context
Set the stage. Tell the AI who you are, what setting you're in, and what background information it needs. The more specific your context, the more relevant the response.
Example: "I am a family physician in a rural clinic with limited specialist access. I'm reviewing a patient's lab results..."
R — Role
Define what role you want the AI to play. This shapes the tone, depth, and perspective of the response.
Example: "Act as a clinical pharmacist reviewing medication interactions..."
A — Action
State exactly what you want the AI to do. Be specific about the task, format, and deliverable.
Example: "Summarize the key findings of this study in 3 bullet points, highlighting clinical relevance..."
F — Format
Specify the output format — bullet points, table, narrative, structured note, patient-friendly language, etc.
Example: "Present this as a structured SOAP note with clear sections..."
T — Target
Define the audience and purpose. This ensures the output matches the intended use case.
Example: "This is for a patient education handout — use 6th-grade reading level, no medical jargon..."
